Growing Herbs while respecting our Environment
"The Ritz for fresh herbs"
Tasman Bay Herbs will treat your taste buds to the ultimate fresh
herb experience through growing a top quality, safe, eco-friendly
product using natural plant protection methods.
All our fresh herbs are harvested by hand, double-graded for
quality and do not require washing before use.
The Greenhouse
Certain fresh herbs such as basil, chives, rocket, salad greens,
coriander, mint and others grow at their best in an environment
protected from the elements, cooled in the summer and heated
in the winter.
We grow our fresh herbs & salads in an environmentally sustainable
way by using pure water that is continuously recycled (using up to
20 times less water then conventional outdoor growing methods).
Our fresh herb seedlings are from non-genetically engineered seeds and cuttings.
Some fresh herbs like rocket are only harvested once and then replaced,
the regrowth is too bitter for our taste.
Other plants like mint or chives stay in the growing system for up to 6
months and are harvested every 2 weeks, the regrowth is of the same
quality as the first cut.
With so many different fresh herbs to cut and different harvesting techniques
to learn it can take up to 3 months to train a new person in the greenhouse.
Our Fresh Herbs are Spray Free
We believe you should be able to eat our fresh herbs and fresh salad
greens straight off the plants, without any need for washing or processing.
A pest-free AND pesticide-free fresh herb is achieved by:
• growing strong healthy herb plants that are pest resistant.
• using herbal sprays to combat insects only when they appear.
• hand grading the fresh herbs & salads.
Sometimes there is a pest or disease problem that we cannot fight using our
biological methods.
In that case we choose not to harvest! So sometimes your favourite fresh
herb will not be available.
The Outdoor Herb Garden
The Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary, thyme, sage, oregano and a few
more of the hardy perennial plants prefer to grow outdoors.
Edible flowers such as calendulas and fresh herbs susceptible to greenhouse
pests, like spider mite, are also grown outdoors.
We established a 3,750 square metre outdoor herb & salad garden that is
now in full production.
